Dilemma

Today I watched an adaptation of a story by Rabindranath Tagore on Netflix. The story was very engaging and thoughtful but the ending made me think much more deeper and I am in a dilemma which I cannot keep to myself alone. Let me share the gist of the story and my feelings about that.

There was a married couple, "Naren and Charu". They were rich and prosperous. Charu was very charming. She liked music and literature. But nobody was there to listen to her and she used to get bored.  Her husband was always busy in his work. He never gave time to her. Then came Charu's brother-in-law Amol, who became her music teacher. He was very jolly. He gave good company to her. She was always busy now. She learnt music again and tried to compose songs. But when she tried to sing to her husband, he was not that interested. She felt bad but then she had other company. Gradually, Charu and Amol became close. Suddenly, her husband faced a financial crisis. He lost huge amount of money. Now he was having much less work. So he thought of spending time with his wife. Amol realised that he should leave from there. So he decided to go abroad for studying law.  Hearing about this, Charu was heartbroken because she had developed feelings for him. She could not bear the pain of loosing him. On the other hand, her husband was trying to make her happy, by singing songs for her, by writing poems for her but she was always lost in other world. When the husband realised it, he was heartbroken. He could not bear it and then leaves her.

Lives of three people are affected.

Now who should be blamed for that?

Is it the husband who never gave attention to Charu when she wanted it?

Or is it the brother-in-law who became too close to her and forgot that one day he will have to leave?

Or is it Charu herself, who forgot about her husband and his attempts to win her back and was living in the old memories?

I am not really sure. But I think they all did a mistake which we all do. They didn't appreciate the present. The husband was busy in the work and did not bother about her wife. Thus, she found happiness in another person's company. I mean, there is nothing wrong in that. The husband gave time to her only when he became free. He was telling her to wait for this moment but why should she! But then again she repeated the same thing. When her companion was gone, she was still in his thoughts and not seeing the efforts made by her husband, who I felt was very innocent. He lost his business and his wife's love both. We also tend to live either in past or in future and not value our present. But we don't realise that we can change our past and not regret about it if we live fully in the present. Appreciating whatever we have now is the most important lesson of life and those who master it are the happiest.

So stay safe and stay in present because time once gone will never come back and what will remain is only its memories. Choice is yours to make those memories good or bad, of pride or of guilt.
